Multiplication of the Loaves and Fish

Multiplication of the Loaves Mt 14: 13 – 21 18 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Introduction Today’s Gospel is the multiplication of the loaves. This story tells us how the Lord provides for the needs of his people. The Lord provides and the Lord sustains. The Gospel 13  Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14  When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. 15  When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16  Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” 17  They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” 18  And he said, “Bring them here to me.” 19  Then he ordered the crowds to sit

Treasures of the Kingdom

Treasures of the Kingdom 17 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Mt 13: 44 - 52 July 26, 2020 Introduction In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks again about the kingdom of God in parables. He presents the kingdom to us in an attractive way, comparing it to a treasure and a pearl of great price. Gospel 44  “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45  “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; 46  on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47  “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind; 48  when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad. 49  So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50  and thr

Parables of the Kingdom

Parables of the Kingdom 16 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Mt 13: 24 – 43 Introduction Today’s reading presents to us three parables. As Jesus said, parables unlock the secrets of the Kingdom that have remained hidden from the world. The Gospel 24  He put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; 25  but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. 26  So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. 27  And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?’ 28  He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The slaves said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ 29  But he replied, ‘No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. 30  Let both of them grow together until the harvest;

Parable of the Sower

Parable of the Sower 15 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Mt 13: 1 – 9 Introduction Today’s reading presents to us the parable of the sower. This parable compares God to a sower sowing the seed of his word. The Gospel That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. 2  Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. 3  And he told them many things in parables, saying: “Listen! A sower went out to sow. 4  And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. 5  Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. 6  But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. 7  Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. 8  Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some s

The Revelation to the Little Ones

The Revelation to the Little Ones Mt 11: 25 – 30 14 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Introduction Today’s Gospel speaks of God’s revelation of himself to the little ones, the humble of heart and the lowly. God reveals himself to the humble because he himself is humble. The Gospel 25  At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; 26  yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27  All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28  “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30  For my yoke is easy, and my b

Discipleship

Discipleship Mt 10: 37 – 42 13 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Introduction Today’s Gospel defines for us what a disciple of Jesus is. A disciple is one who loves the Lord above everything else. Such love urges a disciple to follow the Lord and eventually serve him. Gospel 37  Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38  and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39  Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. 40  “Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41  Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; 42  and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these l

Jesus The Living Bread

Jesus The Living Bread Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Jn 6: 51 – 58 Introduction Today is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Today, we remember Jesus giving himself as food and drink for the life of the world. The Gospel 51  I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” 52  The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53  So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54  Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55  for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56  Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57  Just as the living Father sent me, and I
