Raising Lazarus

Raising Lazarus Jn 11: 1 – 45 Fifth Sunday of Lent Introduction Lazarus has died. Now Jesus comes and does the impossible. He raises him back to life. In doing so, Jesus tells all who were present that He is the resurrection and the life and that anyone who believes in him, even if he dies, will live. The Gospel Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2  Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. 3  So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, [ a ] “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” 4  But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” 5  Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, 6  after having heard that Lazarus [ b ] was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. ...

The Man Born Blind

The Man Born Blind Jn 9: 1 -41 Fourth Sunday of Lent Introduction Today we hear about the man born blind who is cured by Jesus. His healing, however, generates a lot of controversy instead of wonder and amazement. In the end, the man born blind is cast out and rejected by the community only to be consoled by Jesus. The Gospel As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2  His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3  Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him. 4  We [ a ] must work the works of him who sent me [ b ] while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. 5  As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6  When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, 7  saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of...

The Samaritan Woman

The Samaritan Woman Jn 4: 5 – 42 Third Sunday of Lent Introduction Today’s Gospel is about the Samaritan woman who meets Jesus at a well. As Jesus begins a dialogue with her, he gradually reveals her secrets which she does not disclose but which greatly burdens her. Eventually, Jesus too, reveals himself to her as the Messiah. These disclosures result in the conversion and transformation of the Samaritan woman who in the end, becomes Jesus’ witness to the people of Samaria.   The Gospel 5  So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6  Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. 7  A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8  (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) 9  The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a dri...

The Transfiguration

The Transfiguration Second Sunday of Lent Mt 17: 1 – 9 Intro Today’s reading presents to us the Lord’s transfiguration. Here, Jesus is transfigured and appears alongside two great prophets: Moses and Elijah. Here too,   we hear the Father revealing Jesus as his own beloved son. Gospel Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. 2  And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. 3  Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4  Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5  While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to h...
